Harvard Kennedy School's foolish decision to announce convicted felon and traitor to our country Chelsea Manning as a Visiting Fellows for the 2017-18 academic year.
Manning, a longtime cross-dresser, was released from a military prison in Fort Leavenworth, Kan., in May after serving seven years of a 35-year sentence, which was commuted by former Far-Left President Barack Obama. Now a private citizen, Manning has remained a hero with the Godless Left for divulging military secrets that put the lives of thousands around the world at risk to this day.
Which is why Pompeo and Morell weren't having it.
After Manning's announcement was made,
citing “an obligation to my conscience — and I believe to the country,” Morell, a fellow since 2013 at Harvard’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, resigned in protest and called the school’s invitation to Manning an endorsement of her decision to break the law. Hours later, Pompeo backed out of a scheduled appearance at Harvard, declared Manning “an American traitor” and publicly shamed the school for signaling to its students that “you too can be a fellow at Harvard and a felon under United States law.”
Indeed, as part of the program, visiting fellows appear on Harvard’s campus for speaking engagements and events, interacting with undergraduate students on “topical issues of today,” the school’s initial announcement explained.
Bowing down to pressure from conservatives and ultimately common sense, on Friday Harvard
published a 700-word statement, several minutes past midnight, from Kennedy School Dean Douglas W. Elmendorf, who sought to rationalize the meaning of Harvard fellowships — “Any determination should start with the presumption that more speech is better than less,” he wrote — before concluding that offering one to Manning was a “mistake” and withdrawing the invitation.
Morell hailed the decision, saying Elmendorf demonstrated “courage and wisdom.”
