Hugh Culverhouse Jr.: Liberal Scumbag of the Week

Why He's the Liberal Scumbag of the Week: for urging businesses and prospective students to boycott the University of Alabama over the state's new abortion law. For that fascist move, the university's board of trustees did the right thing and voted to return a $21.5 million gift from Culverhouse Jr. — the school's biggest donor — and take his name off its law school.
A week after Coral Gables philanthropist Hugh Culverhouse Jr. called for students to boycott the University of Alabama over the passage of a law banning nearly all abortions in the state, the university’s board of trustees voted Friday to give back a $21.5 million gift and remove his name from its law school.
Culverhouse, a top donor at the university and former Miami prosecutor, said the board decision was retaliation for “exercising free speech” and accused the university of lying to the public. The university stated Culverhouse’s “ongoing attempts to interfere in the operations of the Law School” led to the unanimous vote to return his money and cut ties with the donor.
Culverhouse said the issues he had with the law school, about decreasing enrollment numbers, had been resolved before he called for a boycott. His $25.6 million pledge to the law school in 2018 was considered the largest gift in the university’s history, the school said at the time. The university wired $21.5 million — the amount he has paid so far — to him Friday.
On May 29, Culverhouse issued a call for a boycott of the state’s economy following the passage of the Alabama Human Life Protection Act, which would ban abortion except for when the life of the mother is in jeopardy. The bill would make performing an abortion a felony in almost all cases. Alabama Governor Kay Ivey signed the legislation into law on May 16, and it is scheduled to go into effect in six months barring a successful legal appeal.
While Culverhouse did not attend the University of Alabama, his parents did. The university’s business school is named after his father, the original owner of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers football team.
“It hurts,” he said of seeing workers remove his name from outside the law school. “It’s sad.”

After the Obama administration set went too far in seeking to protect college students claiming they were sexually assaulted, “completely eroding” the due process rights of the accused, DeVos seeks to solve the problem and get back to a balanced playing field:
Under Obama-era Title IX rules, there was a sharp rise in men who say they were unfairly accused of sexual assault on college campuses thanks to a lower standard of evidence for finding guilt as “more likely than not,” but both the accused and accusers have complained about shoddy investigations and biased tribunals.
The Title IX law, enacted in 1972, forbids discrimination based on sex in education. It was once seen as a measure to ensure equity in college sports, but after President Barack Obama decried the “rape crisis” on our nation’s campuses, the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) issued several “Dear Colleague” letters starting in 2011, directing college administrations to tackle the issue – and prove on paper they were doing so – or risk losing their federal funding.
The Trump Administration is set to release their new Title IX regulations on campus sexual misconduct this month, in time for the new semester, and is expected to roll back many of the Obama-era crackdowns that burdened colleges and universities and unfairly punished many accused, according to a preliminary draft obtained by The New York Times.It was back in Fall 2017 that Devos called for replacing Obama-era rules for investigating allegations of sexual violence on campus that “failed too many students” with a more “workable, effective, and fair system.”
“Every survivor of sexual misconduct must be taken seriously. Every student accused of sexual misconduct must know that guilt is not predetermined. These are non-negotiable principles,” DeVos said. “Due process either protects everyone, or it protects no one. The notion that a school must diminish due process rights to better serve the ‘victim’ only creates more victims.”

Frankly, I'm tired of all the talking points surrounding these horrific shootings. And that's from both sides. What President Trump should do is rise above the fray, leave politics and extremists out of this and form a bi-partisan commission of pols, educators and law enforcement to find a solution on this and if need be, present it to Congress to pass. If not, then sign an executive order to get whatever the commission's findings are, done.
