J.J. Watt: Person of the Week
Claim To Fame: DE for the Houston Texans
Why He's the Person of the Week: While there have been many professional athletes, celebrities and other VIPs around the world who have reached down in their pockets and gone out of their way to donate money to the relief efforts in Texas and Louisiana after the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey, Watt's effort stands out. A 4-time Pro-bowler who was drafted by the Texans with the 11th pick in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft, Watt has made it his business to become a public face for those who wish to help Harvey victim's out. Last Sunday Watt started an online fundraiser for victims of Hurricane Harvey with a modest goal of $200,000. On Friday, the amount donated surpassed his updated goal of $17 million. His new goal is $20 million.
When the fundraiser hit the $10 million mark, Watt recorded a video thanking all of his donors, from the celebrities down to the "kids with lemonade stands" who held fundraisers of their own to donate. Watt again pledged that all of the money raised would go directly to the victims of the flood, saying that "phase one" of the project would be the delivery of supplies to the city, including generators, baby products, and other items.
The Houston Texans standout said: "My first phase is what I'm doing is this weekend, my teammates and I have semi-trucks rolling in from out of town that we filled up," Watt told CNN's AC360. "We have about nine semi-trucks that are going to come to town. And we have those all filled with stocks, supplies, water, food, clothing, everything. So, we're going to give that out this weekend.
"I'm not just here for the initial fundraiser," Watt later added. "I'm here to make sure that we take care of you down the road."
Indeed, Watt is a role model on and off the field. To donate, click here.
