Bitter Columnist George Will: ‘Highest Priority’ of the GOP Should Be to Stop Trump

Columnist George Will is so alarmed by Donald Trump‘s “comprehensive unpleasantness” doing well in the Republican primary that in his newest column, he just comes out and says stopping Trump needs to be conservatives’ highest priority.

Will asks at the top if there is anything remotely redeemable about this “fundamentally sad figure” who coasts on his “compulsive boasting” and need for others’ approval.

It seems like Trump’s sorta-embrace of Vladimir Putin (he snarks that maybe it was just a coincidence that dozens of Putin critics have ended up dead) was the last straw of sorts for Will. He said, ” Trump has forced conservatives to recognize their immediate priority.”

He understands how crucial it is for Republicans to win the White House and beat the Democrats, but as far as Will is concerned, “Conservatives’ highest priority now must be to prevent Trump from winning the Republican nomination in this, the GOP’s third epochal intraparty struggle in 104 years.”

What a bitter, bitter man. Of course, people in the know are aware that Will's wife served as an advisor to Scott Walker, who Trump repeatedly dissed during the campaign for the GOP nomination before Walker sadly dropped out the race. And there are other reason's that Will's hatred for Trump including the Donald's past ridicule of Ronald Reagan, long a hero to Will.

Scott Walker Drops Out of Presidential Race

According to multiple media reports, Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker will drop out of the race for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination.

The sudden announcement is expected to be made official during a 6 PM EST speech in Madison, Wisconsin. The decision comes after Walker plummeted from the top of the polls to less than one half of one percent in the most recent CNN poll.

Walker is the second Republican to drop out of the race after former Texas Governor Rick Perry dropped out of the race earlier this month.

Call me shocked too that he'd quit so soon. But then for all his major wins battling the Left and Big Labor in Wisconsin, on the national scale, simply put, he was an utter fail.

What Happened To Scott Walker?

Pre-Trump, Scott Walker was arguably the man to beat for the GOP nomination. Iowa was already practically in the bag, with Walker jumping out to a double-digit lead in the Hawkeye state and no real threat coming from establishment candidates like Jeb Bush. Backers reel off the laundry list: He’s the only guy in the race who won three gubernatorial contests in two election cycles. The Wisconsin governor is a union conqueror and debt dissolver…inherited a huge deficit and made it a surplus. And before running to the comments section and advising putting away the Walker pom-poms, do know my horse was declared in this space back in January. For the purposes of this column, this is simply an exercise of listing why Walker was considered a real contender for the nomination. 

But then along came Trump and out came all the oxygen in the room. Some–like Ben Carson, Carly Fiorina, Ted Cruz and the afore-linked John Kasich have been able to find a few bubbles to rise above the GOP frontrunner for long enough to get a rise on the polls, sure. And the one candidate who has absolutely disappeared–and we’re talking Ed Snowden-esque disappeared–it’s been the 47-year-old Walker. And the results have been devastating: An August 12th CNN/ORC poll shows he’s now running a distant third in Iowa (trailing Trump by 13 points and Carson by 5), in a state any and every political expert says he must win or can call it a day. Nationally, Walker is down to six percent support in a Fox News poll released today, his lowest number in over a year. 

So what happened? Basically, Walker isn’t flashy. He’s not soundbite-driven in a media culture built around it. His seemingly-perpetual hound dog expression doesn’t result in almost any decent photos of him in terms of displaying intellect or gravitas. Call it shallow or superficial, but like it or not, this stuff matters early on…particularly when being introduced to many voters for the first time. 

But is the drop also due to a poor debate performance? Not really. Walker didn’t distinguish nor hurt himself that night and was barely discussed afterward as a result. In the end, perhaps he resembles a classic politician too much, which is not a good thing in this race. Just ask Jeb Bush or Hillary Clinton: This is the anti-establishment race on both sides–at least for now–that craves authenticity, candor and people who aren’t career politicians (the honest Bernie Sanders being the exception because of the stark contrast that is Hillary).

How Donald Trump Can Win The Debate

Muhammad Ali once professed that "it is hard to be humble when you are as great as I am." The current fantastic polling results for Trump in the run-up to the first Republican Party debate may make it difficult for him to approach the event with any sense of humility and propriety.

However, if he could find it within himself to demonstrate the high standards of decorum that the audience expects from a "real" presidential candidate, he could leave the stage as he entered -- the definitive front-runner among 17 Republicans vying to be the next president of the United States. 

In fact, Trump said on ABC this weekend that he won't be "throwing punches" and "I'm not looking to attack." But he also accused his rivals of being "all talk, no action."

Trump should not forget that exigence, the audience's expectation for what will be communicated and how it will be communicated, helps determine how people will interpret and respond to his presentation. Trump's scorched-earth attacks on immigrants, military veterans and the rest of the field have largely succeeded because they fit within the narrative of character and crisis that sustains the attention of the networks and their audiences.

Presidential debates are different. The audience expects more. They want to be informed about solutions and not simply entertained.

Scott Walker Officially Announces Presidential Campaign

Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker became the fifteenth or whatever GOP candidate Monday morning, tweeting his candidacy and releasing a YouTube video several days after someone, possibly the computer gods, jumped the gun and accidentally announced last week:

“I am running for president to fight and win for the American people,” Walker promised in the video. “Without sacrificing our principals, we won three elections in four years in a blue state. We did it by leading.  Now, we need to do the same thing for America. It’s not too late. We can make our country great again.”

Walker was arguably the first breakout star of the 2016 election cycle, catapulting into national prominence after a barnburning Iowa Freedom Summit performance last winter. He has stayed in the top five of primary polling ever since, though subsequent missteps on foreign policy have led GOP figures to wonder if he’s too much of a novice for the position.

After the way this guy took on corrupt unions in his state time and time and time again and won, I'd say he's one of the few GOP candidates for President people should take seriously.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday rejected a challenge to Wisconsin's Republican-backed law requiring voters to present photo identification to cast a ballot, a measure Democrats contend is aimed at keeping their supporters from voting.

The justices declined to hear an appeal filed by the American Civil Liberties Union, which challenged the law. The ACLU said it then filed an emergency motion with a federal appeals court to try to keep the law from taking effect immediately.

Republican Wisconsin Attorney General Brad Schimel said the law cannot be implemented for the state's April 7 election because absentee ballots are already in the hands of voters but would be in place for future elections. "This decision is final," Schimel said.

Voter identification laws have been passed in a number of Republican-governed states over Democratic objections. Republicans say voter ID laws are needed to prevent voter fraud. Wisconsin's measure, blocked by the Supreme Court last year, was backed by Governor Scott Walker, a potential 2012 Republican presidential contender.

Democrats say voter fraud is rare and the rules are intended to deter voters including the poor, minorities and college students from voting, groups that are less likely to possess the necessary forms of identification but are more likely to vote for Democratic candidates.

The law would require voters to present one of a handful of forms of photo ID such as a Wisconsin driver's license, a passport, a military ID or an ID card from a Wisconsin university or college.

In October, the high court temporarily blocked the Wisconsin law. It did not explain its reasoning, but it was most likely because the statute was being implemented so close to the November election, which could have caused confusion and disruption.

Gee, making sure only U.S. citizens get to vote, how dare they!

Liberal Websites Walk Back Claim Scott Walker Eliminated Campus Rape Provisions

Jezebel ran a story Friday by former Intercept reporter Natasha Vargas-Cooper highlighting a provision in Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker’s proposed budget that deleted numerous requirements for reporting sexual assault on campus. “Scott Walker Wants Colleges to Stop Reporting Sexual Assaults,” the headline read.

But the twenty-six deletions, part of $300 million worth of budget cuts and accompanied by an effort to largely disassociate the university system from state control, were requested by the university to eliminate duplicate reporting requirements. The information is already reported to the Department of Justice, as well as published on the university’s website. (The Cap Times gets into the details.)

“State statute changes were required to give UW System full authority status and the UW System requested the deletion of provisions of duplicative reporting requirements as part of the move to the authority,” a Walker spokesperson said Saturday. “In this case, UW System requested this report requirement be removed because there is already a federal reporting requirement related to sexual assault and harassment on campuses.”

“Student education and mandatory reporting are important practices also built in, and those practices are going to continue on our campuses,” a UW spokesperson told the Associated Press. “We are not lessening our commitment here or at our institutions one iota.”
