Mediaite.com:
The majority-Republican House passed a bill today that would implement stricter screening procedures for refugees, with the help of 47 Democrats. No doubt, this issue could make a huge difference come election time.
Republicans have been pushing this legislation to ensure that each and every refugee coming to the U.S. is thoroughly inspected and certified as not a threat by national security leaders.
The White House made it clear last night that if the legislation passes, President Obama will veto it because it would “introduce unnecessary and impractical requirements that would unacceptably hamper our efforts to assist some of the most vulnerable people in the world.”
However, according to RollCall, it appears that some Democrats were frustrated by the White House’s messaging and lack of a compelling reason to vote against the bill. Democrat Gerald Connolly––who ended up voting against it––said, “What they should be doing is accepting the bill and offering to work with all of us on both sides to make it workable.”Only 2 Republicans voted against the bill, bringing the final total to 289-137. And that happens to be over two-thirds majority, enough to override a presidential veto.
